Al Pacino will be honoured at the upcoming Venice International Film Festival.

The 71-year-old actor-and-director is set to show his documentary Wilde Salome at the prestigious movie event, and will be awarded with the coveted Jaeger-Le Coultre Glory to the Filmmaker 2011 Award.

The accolade aims to recognise those who have made a significant impact on contemporary film, with previous winners including French moviemaker Agnès Varda and Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone.

The Italian festival will run from August 31 to September 10, and Al is set to receive his honour on September 4.

Marco Mueller, director of the festival, is quoted describing Al as “an amazing director, whose experience is precious and original, and enriches the world of contemporary film” in the Hollywood Reporter.

It is expected that the ceremony honouring the moviemaker will precede the world premiere of Wilde Salome, in which Al examines and re-interprets Salome, the once-banned work of controversial nineteenth century playwright Oscar Wilde.
