This European compilation, readily available as a discount-priced import, contains all of Freddie & the Dreamers' U.K. and U.S. chart entries in their original recordings licensed from EMI Records. In America, the group is remembered for a brief heyday in the spring of 1965 begun by the chart-topping success of "I'm Telling You Now" and characterized by lead singer Freddie Garrity's goofy dancing. In England, they had a longer career, though most of their hits still were in an exuberant Merseybeat style. What you get here are the hits and a few soundalikes, plus, interestingly, a slew of rock & roll covers that illuminate another side of the band, that of a hard-charging rock outfit that followed the Beatles into the Hamburg clubs and duplicated much of their rough-and-ready repertoire. For example, their version of "Kansas City," like the Beatles', is actually a medley with Little Richard's "Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey," an arrangement first performed by Little Richard himself. Freddie Garrity doesn't always sing lead on the rockers so you could easily think you were listening to an entirely different group, but if you only know Freddie & the Dreamers from "Do the Freddie" and its ilk, this album will give you a more well-rounded picture. Of course, as a barebones budget-priced collection, it does not compare with more comprehensive compilations of the group.
