Dave Shuttleworth's blog
Did you get the memo about this?
Well, since we are the "At Work" station, I thought it fitting to add this story. While you're toiling away in your workspace today please take a moment to remember that the cage you are in 40 years-old...
The cubicle celebrates its 40th birthday this month. A party is unlikely.
What's to celebrate? The cubicle office system is one of the most derided realities of modern work life.
Somehow, the spaces that white-collar worker bees unlovingly refer to as "cubes" have become an icon for all that is confining, uninspiring, soulless and humdrum in our workaday lives.
The Comic Book Nerds Will Be All Over This!
Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of Hollywood's box office superheroes.
The Dark Knight took in a record $155.34-million in its first weekend, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released the Batman Begins sequel.
That topped Hollywood's previous best of $151.1-million, set by Spider-Man 3 in May 2007.
"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," Fellman said. The movie should shoot past the $200-million mark by the end of the week, he said.
A Star is Born!!!
A man can't take a few weeks off without people asking if he's still working! Yes, I've been away for a few weeks getting to know my new daughter. Laurel Rebekah Sanders Shuttleworth was born on July 4, 2008. We briefly discussed naming her Liberty or America, but we felt that Laurel was better. I was a bit of a surprise because she was due July 28th. I guess surprise is an odd word to use because my wife, Jenn, had been pregnant since November!
The last two weeks have been amazing! As a first-time father I have learned a lot, and the learning, no doubt, will continue! We have pictures, which I will post when I figure out how. Or, better yet, join me on Facebook and see them there. Feel free to offer advice - it seems everyone that has kids is an expert anyway!
A trust fund has been set up
As many of you know already, tragedy struck a Hamilton family late last week. The Smith Family was en route to Myrtle Beach when their SUV lost control and collided head-on with a transport truck. Bill Smith, an HSR driver, his wife Sandra and daughter Kaylee were killed on impact. Two other daughters survived the crash and have since been transferred to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.
We can't begin to understand the impact that this tragedy will have on these two young girls. Madison and Genna are both in stable condition, but the real healing process has not even begun. A special trust fund has been set up to help these girls. I would encourage you to donate. Hamilton has a brilliant track record when it comes to helping those in need and I know that this city will answer the call.
Happy Canada Day, but what do I know?
Tomorrow is Canada Day. With that, I felt it appropriate to talk about the one certainty that happens every year at this time. No, it is not the fireworks at Bayfront Park (which, by the way, I will be hosting). Nor is it the annual Shuttleworth Family drink-up at The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club either, but thanks for reminding me. I'm talking, of course, about the annual survey, put out by the Dominion Institute, reminding us how much we don't know about Canada. I don't claim to know everything but I believe that every Canadian needs to have a solid base of historical knowledge about this country.
Movies for fans and nerds alike!
I'm going to go out on a limb a say that come Monday, the number-one movie at the box office will be "Wanted". But sometimes I'm a sucker for a documentary. "Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed," staring Ben Stein, opens in limited release in Canada this weekend. Boy, he's come a long way since playing Ferris Bueller's Economics teacher!

This is pretty cool...SNL will go Retro this weekend!
I'll post the link to the story so you can read all the details. I plan to park myself in front of the TV on Saturday night.

See you tonight...If you're 65 or older!
Tonight, I will be hosting the annual Hamilton Municipal Senior Citizen of the Year Award Ceremony at Sackville Hill Senior's Centre. This is the 4th time that I have hosted the event. A great evening and dinner are planned and many local dignitaries will be in attendance. I plan to host this event until I qualify for the award too. June 25, 2041. I will expect you to be in attendance on that evening.
George Carlin was a Hero!
I'm in for Pete this week and, as usual, you will find hints to win some prizes during the Classic Cafe.
George Carlin passed away yesterday. Those of you under 30 might remember him from "Shining Time Station" or the "Bill and Ted" movies, but he was a revolutionary comic genius. Here's the article on his passing.
Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs, dirty words and the demise of humanity, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday. He was 71.
Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. local time (9 p.m. ET) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.
Making amends…
I wrote this last night but I'm just getting around to posting it now...
"The government now recognizes that the consequences of the Indian residential schools policy were profoundly negative and that this policy has had a lasting and damaging impact on Aboriginal culture, heritage and language." - Prime Minister Steven Harper
This afternoon, Prime Minister Steven Harper stood in the House of Commons and formally apologized to Aboriginal Canadians for the treatment of children in the Residential Schools Program. Perhaps I'm being naïve, but I didn't think for a moment that there would be this much controversy over an apology.
