Ronald McDonald Family Room Requires Volunteers

The house that love built is expanding its service to families of critically ill children and needs volunteers to help it provide the unique program.

Hamilton's Ronald McDonald House is creating a Ronald McDonald Family Room (RMFR) in partnership with McMaster Children's Hospital. The room - a haven within the hospital - will serve both local and out of town families whose critically ill children are being treated at MCH. The room is expected to open in early May.

The family room is a wonderful extension of the House as it is a warm and welcoming area for families to relax while their child is in hospital. Its purpose is to allow families to remain at the hospital and be close to their child in a restful and comforting atmosphere.

The family room will be staffed by volunteers and provides a kitchenette with refreshments and laundry, shower and entertainment facilities.

Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. seven days a week. Volunteers will be asked to commit to two four-hour shifts per month.

Laura Tremblay RMFR Manager said, as at the House, volunteers are essential to the operation of the new family room.

"Volunteers will undergo training for the family room as well as training specific to the hospital. Volunteers are required who are mature and compassionate, able to work independently and have excellent communication and problem solving skills," she said.
